Jake Conley Introduction
Jake Conley, my psychic investigator gave me the opportunity to deal with some serious twenty-first century issues, such as the environment, racism, unscrupulous artefact collection and power-seeking; all the while, thanks to Jake’s retrocognitive ability, not deserting my preferred Anglo-Saxon period. Being able to witness the pre-Conquest centuries through modern eyes, makes Jake’s sorties into the past a vivid experience for him and, I hope, also for my readers.

The Jake Conley series of seven novels draws on fantasy very heavily. Readers who enjoy that genre should find satisfaction here as Jake can travel in time, bind minds and shape-shift. He comes across the old Saxon gods, deals with seers and meets good and bad elves, a unicorn, a seraph and demons.
I never lose sight of historical authenticity, amidst this fantastic array of characters, so readers accustomed to my historical novels should still find material to interest them. As an added bonus, there is a great deal of archaeology thrown in. For example, the artefact of the fourth book, The Snape Ring can be admired in the British Museum as well as on the cover of my book.
I hope you enjoy my modern-day secret agent, Jake Conley, loosely based on the author, with all his faults. Except that Jake has an elfin beauty that I can only envy! Pinions of Gold, The Serpent Wand and The Beast of Exmoor are now available.

*****5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read!
This was really engrossing and made for a compelling read. It's a very unique tale, unlike anything I've previously read. The way in which we are taken back in time is so creatively done. Broughton evidently knows a great deal about Saxon history, as is evident from his library of novels.
It deals with contemporary issues and weaves in Saxon history, which is causing ramifications in the present day. If you're a fan of historical fiction and paranormal mysteries, you've found your next read. I'm definitely going to be reading more of Broughton's work.

Pinions Of Gold:
Invasion, 674 AD and Werburgh, great-niece of the Abbess of Ely travels by night to bury and save the abbey treasure under a wayside cross in the kingdom of Lindsey.
Werburgh ordered the crafting of a magnificent gold and garnet jewel in the form of a dove. A cryptic inscription on the back indicates the location of the treasure. The dove becomes a family heirloom and only resurfaces in the English Civil War. But it too is buried. In the 1930s a ghost of a family member appears, to spark off an investigation by psychic investigator Jake Conley and his wife, Alice, called in to solve the mystery. This sets off a search for the legendary treasure and a trail of deaths. Their lives are in danger as they draw ever closer to locating the archaeological find of the century. Will they outwit the hired killer of an arch-collector of Anglo-Saxon artefacts and other ruthless individuals in the race to save the treasure for the nation? |
*****5.0 out of 5 stars Buried treasure, fact or legend? Jake Conley on top form
Jake Conley returns in the latest adventure from the pen of John Broughton. Together with his wife, Alice they find themselves involved in a hunt for a fabled 7th-century cache of buried religious treasures, previously thought to be nothing more than a legend buried in the mists of time. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones searching for the treasure and they soon find themselves in danger from the wealthy 'competition', who has hired a gun-toting private investigator to ensure he wins the race to obtain the treasure. Soon, it becomes a fast-paced but dangerous task as their chief competitor is murdered and another more sinister element enters the equation.
I found this the best of the Jake Conley stories so far and eagerly look forward to the next book in the series. Thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely a five-star read in my opinion.

They choose the winter solstice at Avebury to provoke the apocalyptic event that will trigger a new Ice Age. Only one man can stop the evil scheme: Jake Conley, psychic investigator. In deadly combat with the conspirators, he is called upon to use all of his powers of retrocognition, shape-shifting and intuition. To survive and save the world from the insane plot, he will have to overcome the greatest challenge of his life. |

*****5.0 out of 5 stars The series gets better and better
This is the 6th book in John Broughton's Jake Conley series and in my opinion each of the books seems to surpass its predecessors and The Serpent Wand is no exception. This is perhaps the scariest of the series as Jake is called upon to fight against an evil cabal whose sworn purpose is to eradicate 80% of humanity, bringing about a new ice age, with the remaining population basically brainwashed to serve the leaders of the evil cabal. Jake's paranormal powers are stretched to the absolute limit and he genuinely feels that this is one fight he may not win. Thanks to those powers, however, support arrives from the 'other side' and together with his wife Alice and his new allies, he finds himself involved in the final battle for the future of humanity. This is a great read that kept me on the edge of my seat and saw me reading into the small hours of the night. I didn't want to put it down. 5 stars for sure from this reader.
